I will be going to this. I will have a room at the resort. If anybody wants to share in those costs, let me know through PM. I am riding from CO. If anybody wants to meet up on the way there, we can plan the route accordingly.... I will be leaving Aug 1st from CO to give myself plenty of time to get to the Dragon rested. Looking at doing 600mi the first day two days and 400 the third.... I will be leaving the afternoon of the 7th/morning of the 8th and beelining it home.

You might want to re-phase the "any skill level" part, there will many more cautions on the track and more parts for the tree of shame. The dragon is not for noobs and beginner riders.

All roads to The Dragon are crooked as hell. If a new rider travels that far, I'll give em the benefit of the doubt of handling 30 -40 mph on the Dragon.

It's not the speed that'll get 'em, it's the tight turns w/ no leaning exp. that will send them off into the tree-drop off on one side of the road or into the gravel-ditch on the other side of the mountain.

Hey Max, why don't you start a "Dragon certification service".... You can go to a parking lot and have people do tight maneuvers and then sign them a little piece of paper that says a professional has checked to make sure they will survive on the Dragon.... You can even sell little patches and stickers or something....

Pfft....

It's not a rider's experience that kills them or not, it's their attitude.... If a noob takes their time and rides carefully, they will survive... Hell, that's what the fast guys do... :p I mean common, Gold Wings and Harleys can make it through the dragon...

I'm not saying don't go and don't ride, I'm saying be careful and be cautious. Just a friendly warning for those who will ride beyond their skill level. It'll get you in trouble quite quickly.

You will find if you lean in those turns, it will make riding the dragon "A LOT" easier and more fun. Going into a turn late or too fast will track you off the road.

I had one near crash, went in the turn too late, bike was tracking off the road, crossed the white line, 3 inches to spare, leaned my ass off to save it, completely hanging off leftside pulling the bike back. The guy riding behind me later told me that was the craziest thing he'd ever saw. I said that was a close call, 3 more inches and it would have been ugly.

If either one of my tires had dropped off the payment, I would have gone down for sure.

Ride safe, don't underestimate the dragon, it will come back to bite you.

Deals Gap 2011 Trip Accomadation Info

We are at the 2 week mark and time is fast approaching. If you plan on going and staying a day or two and have not found a place to stay, now is the time to start making arrangements. Prices will go up and accommodations will begin to fill. Keep in mind that there is another rally taking place that same weekend. Also if you do not mind sharing a room, tent or cabins with strangers, check the other forums for others looking to split cost with. There are a few.

Here is some information for those on a budget and looking to camp at or near Deals Gap Resort. This is not an exhaustive list, but areas recommended by various forum members.

The Foothills Parkway Gathering

You are invited! Please join me on the Parkway!

Saturday August 6th at 7pm.

The Foothills Parkway at the Look Rock parking lot. It is about 15 minutes from the Overlook at the gap.

There is a large parking lot and it is super easy to find and get to.

I will have drinks (water, soda etc..) and light fare.

We can hang out, relax and eat for a bit.... then

Why are we here?

Sunset is at 8:36 on this date. It is about a 10 minute walk up the hill to a fire tower/look out point. Weather permitting it is a great view of the Smoky Mountains and the valley towards Knoxville.

Here is a picture from Killboy.com

I suspect that I can get an idea on Friday and Saturday as to how many if any will be attending. Please feel free PM me if you want to give me advance notice or if you just need some local information or help.

Cheers!

More camping

http://www.tremontcamp.com

This is an RV and campground but they have these little cabins that might be decent. Some are right on the river. Looks fun. This is literally at the entrance to the GSM Park.

Little 12X12 cabins - $75.00 check out website

http://koa.com/campgrounds/townsend-great-smokies/

It’s a KOA. Nice location. They have little cabins on the river but I think they are probably booked already. There is of course RVs there and tent camping

http://lazydazecampground.com/

I don’t know… I think mostly RV’s here. Come to the wilderness and park 5 feet from your neighbor. Turn on the TV and microwave some popcorn. Woot.

Blue Ghost, I'll be staying in Pigeon Forge, do you think this is a reasonable location?
Pigeon Forge is nice. It's a tourist area, so you have great amenities there. it's about 1.5 hrs from the Gap. Bosgarage57 is in Sevierville, Tn. He may be looking to get closer to the gap. I think he works in PF also. The Official Deals Gap 2011 Trip August 4-7
Scorch stayed in PF one night last year as well. There is someone else staying in Sweetwater, Tn at the Comfort Inn which is about an hour away.
