What's the difference between "run" and "prime" on the fuel petcock

During the regular inspection on my bike I ran into a small selector on the left side that read run and prime. What in the world does these selector mean and what should it be set on?

Yes, it is the fuel petcock. It should be set to "run". "Prime" is when you've had the tank off and the carbs drained, just to get fuel back in the carbs, and then you can turn it back to "run".

Like Spoophy said,

Run works by vacuum from the engine running, like a fuel pump.

Prime is just a direct flow of fuel from the tank by gravity.

Prime is used if you run out of fuel or sometimes if the bike has been sitting for a long time and the fuel evaporates from carby.
