Turn signal and shifting?

2561 Views 16 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  yorkie
I have been noticing that sometimes when I shift gears my turn signal will go on as if I clicked it left or right. But I'm almost positive I didn't. I am more focused on the road to pay attention to my hands while I'm shifting but I still don't think there's any way I have been clicking the turn signal button during a shift as this has happened multiple times.

Idk if it's a coincidence of some kind of electrical issue or what but lately I have been having some problem with my high beam light as well. I checked the fuse and it's fine. But last week it stopped working, then started working a couple days later then went like 5 or 6 days without working again and then finally today it started working again. I don't know if it's just on it's last leg and I simply need a new one or if this has anything to do with some kind of electrical issue? Am I crazy or has anyone experience anything similar?

Sounds to me like u have some wiring problems.
U may want to take things apart n have a looky see for shafing on some wires.
Places to be looking is where ur wiring bends as u turn ur steering head.

Is shafing a bad thing I'm assuming?

Shafing is when ur wiring or anything is close to something as it moves n it wears threw the cover to make it short out.
Or say on such a thing as gas lines or brake lines cause a leak.
Also at times where things tend to bend alot it can break the wires inside the wire case n cause problems. This u may not be able to see, but as ur wires moves as u turn it can make the copper wire inside the case come apart to make the connection not work.
But u may have other issues also.
Best way to tell is to get a good look at things first.
I had this issue with my horn wiring when i got my bike n had to cut n replace my horn wire making it a bit longer so it wasn't being stretched as i turned.
Myself i think Kawi does a very poor job in their wiring design.
My honda bikes were much better with wiring designs

Tell me it's an easy/cheap fix if you know what you're doing?

I can't say.....
It could be as easy as replacing a few short sections of wire to....
Replacing a whole harness.....
But if u smell wires burning ur in trouble 4 sure....
Hopefully someone else will come on n tell u a bit more...

I wish I knew what burning wires smells like. Because sometimes after shifting I smell a faint smell that lasts for a couple seconds at most before going away.
I don't know why shifting n wiring trouble would go together on ur bike..?
Onlything that would even have anything close would be ur clutch lever in that area of wiring...

Burning wiring would have the smell of burning plastic.

We'll looks like I will have to take a look and see if I can find some info online and check it out this weekend. If not maybe have shop look at it. Have to go in there anyways😔
It would be a good idea to have someone with experiance look at it be4 it burns up on u....
Anytime i have my tank n front end apart i always do my best to look at my wiring as i turn my steering.
I have many times used duct tape to make antishafe covers for things on my bike.
My ecu/fuel processor is under my tank on my airbox cover.
I notice it was shafing real hard on my tank in 2 spots.
I made a half dozen layers of duct tape to prevent it from continuing.
It has worked so far....

it's probably getting pushed when your hand is trying to pull the clutch and it's probably worn out over time and is causing it to be extra sensitive therefore whenever you go to share you notice that your blinkers on more than likely that would be your issue. Because there's no electrical wiring that goes in to the clutch or anything about the clutch except for the safety switch for the for the pull so that you can start your bike not in gear or in gear

twisted throttles brings me smiles

I am almost 95% sure I'm not pushing it. Where my hand is there's almost no way. I mean I could be wrong I guess I will watch it closer next time I shift.

try just wiggling the switch and see if it comes on. If not you may have a wiring issue where I'd say the clutch pull safety and a turn signal have rubbed and are touching

Yeah I just tried wiggling it and it's pretty stiff so I don't think it's that I hit it because its not sensitive. So I am leaning towards a wiring problem and I really hope it's an easy/cheap fix:/
Are you sure it's the indicator light and not the neutral light that flashes for a split second?
Had this on my nine and it was the clutch switch contacts corroded.
But as you have headlight problems too you want to check the handle bar loom on the lefthand side, chances are the unit or wires are damaged and shorting.
Also check the earth bullet/plug connector a few inches from the battery negative terminal.

I have yet to have spare time to look at this wiring problem... Is it better to refrain from riding until I can look at it and hopefully fix it?
Probably best not to as you don't want to be left stranded at the side of the road if the worst should happen.
