i've been browsing the internet trying to find a nifty way to clean my chain without any sort of stand.. and haven't come up with anything really good. does anyone NOT have a stand and have some nifty way of going about it? it seems like everyone in the world has one.

i found this during my internet travels

How NOT to clean your chain. **GRAPHIC PICS*** : Suzuki GSX-R Motorcycle Forums: Gixxer.com

glad i didn't run out and buy a stand.. i was thinking about doing the exact same thing

Cleaning and lubing your chain without a rear stand is not all that hard, it just takes a little bit more time and space.

When you clean the chain while on the sidestand, it is a good idea to take the chain guard off to clean and lube a small section at a time. I use either a piece of cardboard or rags to cover the swingarm, tire and ground to prevent overspray and dripping. Rolling the bike forward or back advances the chain sections for cleaning. An old toothbrush works great for scrubbing and wont tear the o-rings.

Kerosene or a good chain cleaner works for cleaning the chain. There is also one thing that a lot of riders don't use any more.. it's 80w-90 gear oil. Gear oil makes a good cleaner as well as lube. It's cheap and a little bit goes a long way, but can be a little messy to use. A lot of wiping involved and flings like crazy if not dried good. I use it to get the chain as clean as possible, then seal it with either Maxima Chain Wax or DuPont Teflon Multi-use Dry Wax Lubricant (now called Chain Saver).

My chain is absolutely filthy, I saw a youtube video where this woman took a can of something and a grunge brush to get all the dirt off and then wiped it off and put lube on the chain (And sproket). I'll get a picture, but this chain is terribly dirty. I also have no stand, my center stand seems to have been removed or something long ago.

650's dont have a centerstand....
I use gas mixed with chainsaw bar oil to clean mine.
Kerosene or diesel fuel is better to use.
I use a stiff paint brush to keep dipping it in ur kero...n....
Just keep working it over n over till the stuff comes off....
I put a metal cake dish under it to catch the mess....
Just because i have these things n no $$ to do buy a bunch of other stuff right now.
How i spin my wheel is this.....now pay attention.....LOL
Have bike in neutral..
I have the bike on the kickstand.....
I then put my left hand on handlebar..n....right hand on other side of bike under what ever is solid.... Mine has a plastic kinda cover on both sides.....feels quite solid. I them pull towards me with right hand while kinda holding the bikes handlebars with left. Bike will now pivot up on kickstand...n...rear tire will come off the ground a bit......
I use my right foot to reach up to the tire n push the top backward n down a bit.....this turns chain.
I have it down pat.....very easy.....
I do all this in a dirt area.....don't want to ruin tar....
A grungbrush would be best, but $$$ is also a issue for me....

just get some kind of solvent that won't hurt the o-rings in the chain or the chain itself.. spray it on there and scrub with the brush then wipe with a rag... afterwards put on some chain lube that you can get at any dealership. i got a big ol' can for 20 bucks or so.. should last a while.

Just role the bike while you're doing it... do one section (on the bottom part of the chain only).. and roll

Long ago a friend of mine decided to tip his bike up on the side stand with it in 1st gear to wipe the grunge off. Well It started to tip back down and as it did he rolled the throttle open and put his "darling" through the work bench AND the back wall of the garage. A rather ignominious ending for his 8 speed Husky.

Using the center stand and running in gear is ok..use lot's of kerosene (easy on the O-rings) with a pan underneath THEN shut it off to wipe it down.
What is an O-ring?

running in gear is not ok... someone posted a thread a few months (i think) ago about how he did that and it his hand got caught.. he no longer has a fully functional hand.

there are little rubber o-shaped things that are between the gabs in the chain and the rollers that are called o-rings
