Targa Rocks!

Well, it took a friend and I the better part of about 2 hours or so to do it but the new kit is installed. I sure with the instructions could have been more specific with more pictures and such. It would have gone faster. But we made it through okay. I replaced my windshield with a Puig Dark Smoke the day before as well. I'm very happy with both mods and don't understand why anyone wouldn't go ahead and spend the money to do it this way. In my opinion it's the cleanest look I've seen. It's very worth the money spent. I had to do a little modifying to the two plastic peices that go on last around the tail light in order to make it fit right but it was nothing a simple pair of sissors wouldn't take care of. Everyone says this site is nothing without pictures so here are some for you to take a look at. I'll do another post with pics of the new windshield shortly.

Crushedcamber - I love the windshield. I think it's totally worth buying. It sucks it was so much just for a small peice of plastic but there really isn't any other option other than paint and I wasn't going to do that. If you can afford it go for it. And if you are wondering about Smoke or Dark Smoke. Go with the Dark Smoke. You CAN see through it. That was something I was wondering about before I bought mine. I have a post about the screen with pictures if you haven't already checked it out.

Thanks Zartan. Your bike is looking good too. Thanks for helping me decide to go for the Targa Kit. I'm really glad I did.

Felix - My main problem with the install was at the end when I was trying to give it a finished look with the two plastic pieces they include in the kit. I thought I had done everything just the way they said but at the end when I needed to stick those on to the black aluminum pan they stuck out past the tail light. I couldn't figure it out and it was really frustrating me. I went inside and took a look at some pictures on the net to see if I was doing it right but it wasn't helping. I ended up saying screw it and getting some scissors to cut them the way I needed them to fit. Once I did it to one I drew around it on the other one and cut it the same way. I stuck them on and I'm happy with it now. When you look at it straight on it looks like there should be something that goes around the edges of the tail light a little better but it's not noticeable unless you know what you are looking for and you really look at it close. The normal person would never notice anything abnormal about it at all.

Also, one of the last steps said something about taking a piece of tubing that was included and putting it around some of the wires and shrinking it around the wires with heat. There was no black tube in my kit so I was a bit confused by that. It did include a black zip tie but it never said where to use it and I didn't seem to need it. I ended up just covering everything up with black electrical tape to keep it a little more away from any water that will get in later. Also, the right blinker wire that goes across and up into the bike is exposed and is yellow and I think green. I don't like that so I'm going to wrap that with electrical tape too in order to make it thicker and less noticeable. I hope some of this makes sense. I added that picture I took of the parts with some red around the pieces i'm taking about to give you a bit of an idea of the pieces I mean. Let me know if you have any questions. All in all I would say this is a great kit. I just wish there would have been a little bit more detailed instruction manual with more pictures. It would have gone much smoother.

One more thing, there were four bolts in the tail that I had to remove. They got replaced with four bolts that came with the kit. I realized those hex bolts are the exact same as the ones you would need to fill the wholes where the front reflectors normally go. So I used two of them for that. Now I have two matching bolts in the front and don’t have to buy the two I ordered for $1.50/bolt from the dealer. I talked about that in another thread. I thought that was pretty handy.

Sorry for such a long post. Hope this helps some of you if you actually take the time to read it.

hey, RoadRunner nice write up. thats the kit, i want to get for my bike. i got couple of questions for you.
where did you order the targa kit from?
did you get extra blinkers with it?
because i look on ebay, that targa kit dont come with blinkers, says uses stock ones.
Hey NEninja. I got my kit on ebay because the link I had found on Zartan's thread from someone else would never work. The only place I could find to buy it was from the seller "targagarage" on ebay. That's still direct from Targa I guess. It shipped fast. I'm thinking they just decided to do all their selling on ebay. Anyway, I got mine in the mail less than a week ago and mine came with separate smaller blinkers. They called them Cat Eye blinkers. They also had a set available on there with some blinkers that looked like arrow heads. I wanted the cat eye ones because I wanted to keep the more round look to match my front blinkers.

I just went and looked and you are right, all their items say they used the stock blinkers. That's crap because their price is still the same and now they don't offer separate ones. I don't know what to tell you there. The only thing I can think of is that maybe they've decided to go that way because the stock lights are DOT approved and the ones I got supposedly aren't. I didn't see any difference other than size so I don’t understand that. Hope this helps. Let me know what you decide to do.

Ya I got mine through targa website its self. It look like 3 weeks to get to my house. Once it was finally shipped it took 3 days but I have no clue why it look so long to figure it out or what ever. But the one through targa had the turn signals with it and it was the same price. I need to get smalled ones for the front signals. All I need to get done now is a exhaust. This elim kit you will definally have no problem with. The directions were Step-by-Step. So if you have no mechanical background you should be able to do it.
RoadRunner, thanks for all of your help. i will probley order it off ebay, and see what i get. if i dont get the extras, i will just use the stock ones.
i was gonna cut it off, then i decided to get the targa kit. because if i do trade it for a bigger bike later, it would look better.

No problem buddy. I think you made a good call. It sucks they don't give you new lights but your stock ones will work just fine. I think just cutting off the mud flap looks kind of crappy. It's definitely best to just get rid of it completely. Good luck with everything.
