As long as you are comfortable and they offer some decent ankle protection, the sky is the limit.
Standard street shoes don't have enough covering over your toes when shifting, and if you happen to come off, without enough ankle support you can suffer serious injury.
I personally only have some full leather riding boots from Alpinestars. Riding in anything else seems strange.

Noice! Not sure I would trust that price tag in a crash though... I'm a bit more like Zandit... Full leather riding boots. I rock the A* Harlems, and couldn't be happier! Let us know how they hold up...

I feel far more comfortable in a full boot. I got my Alpinestars SMX-5 boots for $100. Super light, very comfy. Look around, find a great deal on great full boots! (I'm a gear advocate if you can't tell!)

Came across the thread while I was bored at work and thought I'd add my .02 worth.
Was in same boat as I needed new boots/shoes for riding. I found a boot by a company called AXO. The boot is called Stinger. Really cool because they don't have laces. Instead they use wire and a ratchet system to secure the boot. The wire laces throughout the tongue of the boot like regular laces but then get directed to the back of the boot to the ratcheting mechanism. It's a dial at the back of the boot that when turned it tightens the wire "laces". To take boots off just pull out on the ratchet dial and slip your foot out.
Boot seemed real stiff when I first got them but wearing them around the house and such helped break them in quite easily and are comfortable but they do not offer no ventilation.
Try looking on the net for them... I think I found a pair on Amazon for like $75 with shipping.
AXO Stinger motorcycle boots.
Good luck!

Yeah Spooph they do on certain surfaces but the more I wear them the squeaks seem to get less noticeable. I was off on my price too. They are little under $90 from Amazon. I do like them though more and more I wear them and get compliments on the cool factor of the wire "laces". I might buy a second pair. My only complaint is that the ratchet to tighten the boots can be a little annoying as far as noise goes. But it works very well and it's a small complaint.

I'm happy with my shift kicker shoes. Sill not a full boot, but very comfy on and off the bike. Quite a bit of protection. More true to size then some if the others I tried on.
I have a pair is Shift Kickers arriving tomorrow. Have heard good things. Hard to find now-a-days as they are no longer made.

Thanks for all the suggestions all.

Blessings,

Got these off eBay for about $130AUD.

Very comfortable and look nice enough. Standard astars quality as well.

Not sure how much protection they would offer but. Reflective stuff everywhere so they light up at night...

I would recommend.
