quick question about the seat cowl

6533 Views 26 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  barto
I'm going to be ordering one off of ebay and would like to know if the seat cowls are year specific in fit. Could I buy a seat cowl made for 08 for my 09? I don't really mind if the black doesn't match. Also if you know of a place online where I can get it cheaper OEM than ebay please send me a link. Thanks

Kawasaki stated that there was no change in the 09 from the 08, if you do have any questions I'd call the local dealer but I'm going from what kawasaki.com says. I saw a few of them on ebay about $20 cheaper than you would buy from your dealer or ordering one out of a catalog. A few people here have bought the cowl from ebay, ha one of them accidently had it shipped to his neighbor, but he got it lol.
Thanks for the QR I'll take your word for it ;)

Going to order now. LOL

and ya I read that thread lol UPS = Use Purolator Stupid ;D
Sweet! Make sure to take some pics when it arrives. And if anything goes wrong...send the bill to Felix heh.
It will fit but, the colors are different between the 2008's and 2009's on all but the green ones.
ColorRite lists different touchup paints.
These are the 2008 colors http://www.colorrite.com/matrix-colors.cfm?CFID=549472&CFTOKEN=45731470

I tried explaining this to one seller on eBay who listed the cowls for both years, and he was even a Kawi dealer.
Hmm, I wonder why they did something like that? I understand why they kept green the same though...kawasaki loves their lime green. Good find, I'll keep that in mind. Its a good thing that watcanido said he didnt mind if the black doesnt match.

Maybe this should be sticky'd for future referances.
i got a green one for 45 bucks brand new dude bought his bike then ordered the seat cowl they took forever and by then he was ready to move up to a 750 so he sold it 2 me for 45 bucks. But in the spring i wll be moving on up myself CBR 600 or GSXR!
Alright I got my seat cowl today looks nice got some issues with it though. How come there is a small cut out on the plastic at the left side of it near the front back rest? does that serve a purpose? The ones I've seen online does not have this, if you have a seat cowl does yours have this? I'm worried that it is a fake one lol, is there anyway to tell? Another thing I can pull the back of it and get it to pop open but not completely off its still locked in, is this normal?

pics..

Nope, that one looks just like mine (only black) and I got mine through the Kawa dealership. And with mine you can lift the back up too (although it shouldn't be ridiculously loose) but the lock in front should keep it down and not fly off even with the back lifted.

That cutout is for the helmet strap. You open the cowl, hook up the D-rind to the helmet hook than close the cowl. The cut out will leave some space for the helmet chin strap.Just that.

Thanks dude that makes me feel better. I thought they sold me a fake one lol.. anyways not all them are the same huh take a look at this pic.

notice there is no cut out on the sides. anyways its does really matter the fit feels secure there is a gap of about 1/2 an inch near the front, does yours have a gap? I was thinking maybe its purpose is for the helmet strap or a finger hole to get the cowl off. well thanks for your reply.

Well thats odd.. The cowl looks like the 08 color but when the dealership screwed up and gave me an 08 instead of an 09, the 08 still had the cut out.

See?

And as for the gap.. I have the same thing and have seen other bikes on the net with the gap as well. Just how its made I suppose. I didn't really like it at first but I hardly notice it anymore. Sorry about the pic quality, too lazy to go and get a better close up.

Oh, and I agree with Eric about the cut out being for the helmet strap..

As we are at this topic, lets go a little further.
The seat cowl doesn't lock in very tight, doesn't it?.It can be rocked slitely from side to side.
That's because of the steal bar underneath it is a little bent down. All we have to do is remove this bar. It's held in place with only two 6 mm bolds.Put a ruller over it and the amount of bend will be visible. Now Just bend the bar streight.Put it back on the cowl. Now it'll give a tight firm fit.

Hmmm, interesting.. I will have to check that out.
GreezMunky cool down. All the 08 and 09 model do have the same cutting.
Mine is a 09 FI version and I also do have that gap.I did get both the pax seat and the cowl the day I bought this bike.

Please do report your findings.
Maybe, just maybe, the genuine once will come with the bend. Then all streight once must be faked.
Then it will be VERY interesting.Ha ha.

Well I just yanked mine off and found a very, very small bend in the middle. Not enough to put it in a vice and hammer it out straight though. I'll have to check my husbands when I get home and see if his is any worse or any better..

It was really hard to see the bend with the naked eye unless you're up close (without the level)..

And up close I still couldn't photograph the bend that well, but you can see it somewhat in the first picture. Might add a stiffner later to fix it, but right now I'm not too worried about it. But yes, you were right, definitely a bend in the bar.

Cool down? I wasn't aware I was overreacting? He asked questions and I posted pictures so he could reference it to his and see his wasn't the only one like that. And if you look at the picture of the seat cowl he posted it doesn't appear to have a cut out at all, which I found really odd..
hmm. The white bike from Indonesia doesn't have the cut out either.

maybe its a region/country thing.
