What is it that you have to do in IL, cause I was wondering how it works. I was thinking that it can't be like a car where you need a person of 21 or older to be with you all the time… but if I'm wrong I would like to know.

Thanks, Jake

Each state could be different, so best to contact your DVM and ask. In WV, however, to obtain a motorcycle permit you simply take the written exam. If you pass you get your permit with a few restrictions such as...

No pillions, no riding after dark and either 60 or 90 (forget which) days before it expires.

A lot of people around here do this to ride during the summer w/o ever taking the real driving test. :(

In NY (and many other states) you can take the MSF course, at the end you will be tested if you pass you will obtain your license that way. Or take the DMV written test, then a road test with the DMV.

I recommend you take the MSF course. What ever direction you choose ride safe and WYGATT!

Here in Rochester NY your permit has to be more than 3 days away from expiring by end of the class. So if the class ends on June 1 your permit cannot expire before June 6. Does this make sense? Definitely research this in your state.

Good choice on taking the class. It's fun and you will learn in a safer environment. Bring a friend or two who are interested ad make it a party!

You needed to have a permit by the first day of class. There was no time frame to have a permit before that. If you did not have a permit by the beginning of the frost class you forfeited the money you paid to take the class.

Just have it in your hands before you attend your first class and you'll be fine. Keep us in the loop on your progress. Maybe post a pic of the bike you want to get once you complete your course!

The NSF course is the way to go by far but sign up for it as soon as you can; they fill up fast, really really fast. Also make sure you have everything on their list of needed clothing. They are dead strict on this. 1 person in my class came in high-top sneakers and was turned away w/o refund.

Very true, this mad course is serious about safety, if you are not 100% compliant, you just threw away good cash!
