New License Plate Holder Design

Hey Guys, this idea has been brewing in my head since I found out the Clear Alternatives is going to (hopefully) make a break light kit. I began to think about how good the bike would look with the turn signals gone, and how it would be a really smooth tail if I could move the license plate. Here is what I came up with for mounting the license plate on the swing arm. (I will post some better pics as I refine the model, but for right now the Swing arm is the rectangular piece with two bolts and then my mounting bracket is the two pieces piggy backed onto it.) The blue in the picture represents lights to illuminate the plate.

Would you mount this on the left or right side of the bike? Seems to me like the plate would be either sticking out 8" on one side, or sticking a couple inches into the rim... Why not stand it up on end? I was thinking of doing the same thing, but ended up tucking the plate up under my seat... It's not as clean as I'd like. Those damned license plates are just not very form fitting. :-\
Wich software did you use for that drawing ? Inventor ?
For my job I'm using Solidedge.

Wow that looks really good I didn't realize you came up with they yourself at first.....let us know if you end up making any.
very inventive but I'd have to see it mounted on a bike to have an idea if i'd like it or not.
I designed this using SolidWorks which is what we use at school. I love the program and it is incredibly powerful, as well as expensive (I’m just using the student version).

Right now this design would be mounted on the right side. Now that I look at it, there are some changes that I am going to make on the next revision. I think I am going to attach the plate at the bottom instead of the sides. That will shave at least an inch off the width. Also, I can shift the whole plate over about another inch toward the brake rotor. Yes, it does stick out a little, but not much further than the muffler. Unfortunately, I cannot mount it vertical. That is illegal in Ohio.

The only thing I am not quite sure on it the lighting. I am still trying to figure the electrical stuff out. I bought 2 lights from radio shack. They are two 6v lights. I would like to use LED’s, but I'm trying figure out exactly what I need for them.

I will keep you guys posted.
I'm really impressed definitely keep us posted.

Alright, here is version 2. It is much simpler and uses less material.

Really vertical licence plate in ohio is illegal? I see harleys or choppers riding around with them all the time like that. I bet the dang cops probably dont even know that law. lol
Ohh and buy the way this just a project or are you going to plan on making it?? Would be sweet for a class project to work on you motorcycle all day. haha
You may want to look into Targa's license plate holder lights. They are a singular LED, mount in the license plate bolt holes, and angle at 70*. I bought two for my bike, one for the tag, and one for the plate... They're bright enough that it lights up the ground around my bike from the excess lighting. Very nice product IMHO.

weth: I do plan on making this thing eventually, but probably not till the spring. I will let you guys know right away when I do.

Travisty: Thanks for telling me about Targa. They have just what I need, and I am going to pick out a few of them to try.
i just like the stock fender. If you do remove it, and do it right like you did then it is alright.
Crush that is an awesome plate number! And I thought Kramer's "ASSMAN" tag was the bomb!

+1 on that buddy, I wish I had those skills. I'd have soo much fun with photoshop. I have photoshop S3 and I've given up lol.
Ive got photoshop 5.0 limited that came with my camera that i got in like 2002. pretty awesome.
Sweet!! I love it when you get free shit. My GF burned me a copy of this crap and its got too much shit, it came out mid '08 and I think its for pro's like crush. Not something I would want to ever use. Maybe if little tykes made a photoshop utility I'd use it lol but I'm not a software guru.
