Lock your bikes front wheel?

I have a 2008 ninja 250 and Im a still very new to this but I was wondering how you can lock the front wheel into place. I see on the ignition where you can do it but everytime I turn it that way it won't let me take my key out. What am I doing wrong?

Also when will I ever need to use my engine kill switch? I've put about 1000 miles on the bike and have never had a use for it yet, at least I think I havnt. Thanks guys

You're moving it one click to far !

Clay, you should always turn your front wheel to the left(kickstand side) when parking. As you do this turn the key and it will go.

Nahh not yet, I'm on vaca in florida. But once I get back I'll do it

2010 250 ninja here,

I always kill the engine with the shut off.
It's the same as turning the key I guess.
It's always Been part of my routine,
Park. Neutral, kickstand, turn left, engine off, lock wheel, key out

But to each his own. It's not a necessity.

Would kicking the kick stand out to turn off the bike be harmful in any way? I did this by mistake. More than once.

No, that would not be harmful. It is a safety function of the bike.
