Have been reading about jacket materials (leather, textile, mesh) and wanted to know your take on jacket outer shell and its protection.

It seems that leather is best when it comes to superior protection, now would a textile or textile/mesh jacket with upgraded armor be as good as leather?

The best jacket, is the one you wear. Better-quality textile jackets have multiple pads and back protection, similar to more expensive leather ones.

Be it leather or textile, find a jacket that feels at home on you. One that flows air well, so you're not likely to shrug it off on a hot day.

I started out with an in-expensive textile jacket. Then I got a really in-expensive mesh jacket for the crazy hot humid Summer days. Then I spent good money on an Alpinestars heavy leather armoured jacket, and it is all I wear now. No matter how hot. It is comfortable and fits great (though I had to try on close to 20 different leather jackets to find a good fit) It feels secure and reliable and I love it.

I believe I will be riding spring, summer and fall. No winters. So would it make since to get a heavier textile with liner or leather rather than a lightweight mesh?

Take a look at the Tourmaster "Intake" jacket.

Textile/mesh chassis with 2 stage zip out liners.
1 liner is wind/waterproof.
1 is quilted (warm)
You can where them in any combination to suit the weather, including no liners - just the mesh chassis.

Level III CE armour in the shoulders and elbows. Very heavy and solid. Also integrated back pad.

I ride from Mar 1 to Nov 1. As long as I pick the right combination of liners, I'm snug and warm.

I have the same setup with my RST jacket, 3 layers and fully customisablejust like the one David mentioned.
I started with Leather, and while it is a great jacket, it is just not warm enough during winter. The textile RST jacket is awesome, and when I have some spare cash, I will get some pants to go with it!

Here is the post I made when I got it!
