Friend of mine swears by this as the best beginner bike, since I haven't ridden either yet I couldn't defend the 250. What could I have said to educate this individual?

I Haven't riden none, but I sat on one in the dealership. This bike is huge compared to the 250R and very heavy, something to take into consideration.

Why educate him? He'll get tired of bikes with half the displacement, blowing his doors off, in the turns.

Some people just have to learn for themselves.

It's too big and heavy for a beginner bike unless you are a pretty large person. Plus it has full fairings - not the best choice for a first bike.

From what I know about it, it's a heavy underachiever.

The older naked version, the GS500E, is a better starter if you need a larger bike IMO.
