Fender eliminator kit?

Recently ordered a fender eliminator kit for my 06 650r and after further research I have found that you have to cut the tail light section away from the hanging section. Does anyone know how to do this or maybe an easier way? I'd hate to just start cutting on my bike and accidentally mess it up. I would take it to House of Kawasaki but they have a waiting list and charge 90$ an hour for labor which is more than the part itself. Any recommendations? If anyone has a 650r and did this to their bike please let me know how you handled this.
