It depends on a lot of different factors. With your height and weight I would personally lean more towards the 400, because it may fit you a little better. But if you are new to riding a 250 would be a great bike to start on. I am the same build and had NO major complaints when I rode my friends 250 for a few hours. The 250 is a lot smaller than i am use to so it took me a little while to get the feel of a light agile bike. At the time i was riding a 1980 GS1100e which is a big heavy thing. I have never rode a 400 so I can not honestly say much about them.

Well if you have the basics down you might be able to work with a dealership to tear ride both of them. But I suggest being upfront and honest with them let them know your riding history and your dilemma. You might get lucky.

Another option is to take. Motorcycle safty / learning course. Some of them provide 250's so you can spend two days on it and see if it's the right bike for you. And at the end you get your license providing you pass the class.

Welcome jasong. Well I don't know about the 400 cause we didn't get them in the states but I'm digging my 250. I'm 5'7" 180 and I feel fine on the 250. Very comfortable bike except in heavy city traffic. I tend to put more weight on the bars and it makes my fingers go numb after awhile but that could just be me. Good luck with your search.
