cam chain tensioner help

Took the bike to the shop for new rubber yesterday. Told me i need to adjust cam chain tension and showed me how to do it. When i adjust it with screw driver counter clock wise it stops ticking. When tool is removed the spring pulls it back to its orginal spot clock wise and a horribly loud ticking follows. Why is it not staying in place? This is my daily driver need help asap thank you.

you failed to mention what year/make/model of moto you have. Also, sounds like a manual cam chain tensioner if you're tightening it with a screw driver.
