I have a question for anyone about Ninja batteries. I keep mine on a battery tender charger a lot (nearly all the time I park it). Lately I've been having some mechanical issues. Cleaned out the tank, put new gas in with some B12 cleaner. Cleaned the air filter and put in new brand new plugs. I still think the carbs might need to be cleaned, however........to the point......

I can start it up and open up the choke but then it dies. And when I try to restart it, it won't fire up again. Sounds close, but no go. I try several times then call it good.

When I plug it back in to the charger the light is on red again. Is that normal? Is that how it's supposed to work? The charger light is green when I unplug and try to start the bike, I make sure. Then within a few minutes after it idles, then dies and won't restart.....it's back to red? Maybe every time you first plug it in it shows red? So maybe it's normal. But to me if it is fully charged, off the charger for like 10 -15 minutes tops, then shows red when plugged back in.....seems odd to me. Bike is an 09 and I bought it used. I'm assuming it's the original battery but can't say for certain.

Do I need to replace the battery? (Sorry - could've made this shorter I suppose! )

09 what? Could be your battery cells are worn down and not holding charge anymore ,check the fluid level ,your rectifier might not work so that will stop the battery holding charge too

You need to check the voltage. It shouldn't need to sit on a charger unless you ride only once every month.

Don't charge it after your last time out (or withing 8 hours), then check the voltage sitting - should be over 12V. Then check the voltage when you are cranking - should be at least 11V. Check the sitting voltage again after cranking. It shouldn't be under 12V.

If it is you need to replace the battery.

If you get a new battery I wouldn't charge it all the time. I just replaced my original battery in my '06 SV this year. I charge it only 3 or 4 times during storage.

A quality battery like a Yuasa is a bit more expensive than a cheap-o but from my experience lasts 2 to 3x as long.
