Does it drip gas when you open the petcock and it dies? If so, a float may be stuck and it's flooding when you open the petcock.
Or, the petcock could be plugged and it runs out of gas. Leaving it sit for a few days allows the gas to slowly fill the bowls again.
Either way, it sounds like a fuel delivery issue.
