Hey everyone,
I just wanted to share a story for the sake of reminding everyone that many of the drivers out there are either a-holes or ignorant, and the only person you could really count on is yourself.
Out for a ride on labor day on local streets in Brooklyn NY, and I proceeded to prepare to make a right turn. Signaled right approximately 200 feet from the turn and slowed down from about 25-30 mph in preparation. As i was considering if I had slowed down enough I was gauging the lean needed to negotiate the turn and as I am literally beginning to push my right handlebar and lean into the turn, a car barrels past me on my right missing me by about 6 inches.
A few things to say about this:
1)Definitely do NOT assume that just because you have signaled and slowed properly, will people respect your right of way.
2) Check mirrors, do your head checks in blind spots, do it again, THEN do it again right as you are about to conduct your maneuver.
3) I am a pretty safe rider and usually am pretty aware of the things going on around me, but this guy definitely surprised and angered me. I swear I actually hesitated at the turn because I contemplated gunning the throttle, catching up to him at a red light, dragging his ass out and beating him to a pulp. This just goes to show that no matter how alert/safe you think you are being, there is always room for improvement.
4) Wear your gear! It was a hot day and it was a rare occasion that I decided to go bare minimum with just my helmet and gloves, tshirt and jeans. Lucky thing I didnt get hit or else I could have been substantially more hurt than I would probably be with full gear on.
5)Dont take anything for granted! Just cuz you signaled or made your intentions clear, it doesnt mean Sh%t!
