Title: I got a new helmet.... Post by: spooph on September 28, 2009, 07:05:06 PM I got one of these... http://www.afxhelmets.com/helmets/fullface/fx-37ds.php?show=flat (http://www.afxhelmets.com/helmets/fullface/fx-37ds.php?show=flat)
DS = Dual Sport = on/off road... :P Which I do with my little Ninja... I mainly wanted it for the cap, to use as sun visor, so that I won't have to ride one-handed every day for the next month going home... :P In the mean time, I've found out a few things: 1.) It's not molded to the shape of my head, which means mods: It hurts here: (http://www.mattwessels.com/cherry/AFX/AFX (1).jpg) Which means I pull back the liner, and try and cut a bit out with a razor blade and realize I'm going to screw something up... (http://www.mattwessels.com/cherry/AFX/AFX (2).jpg) So I then mark the spot with a sharpy... (http://www.mattwessels.com/cherry/AFX/AFX (5).jpg) And add electricity in hopes of not screwing something up... (http://www.mattwessels.com/cherry/AFX/AFX (3).jpg) (http://www.mattwessels.com/cherry/AFX/AFX (4).jpg) Excess material removed: (http://www.mattwessels.com/cherry/AFX/AFX (6).jpg) Cleaned out with an air compressor: (http://www.mattwessels.com/cherry/AFX/AFX (7).jpg) (http://www.mattwessels.com/cherry/AFX/AFX (8).jpg) Ah, fits so much better: (http://www.mattwessels.com/cherry/AFX/AFX (9).jpg) Without the sun visor: (http://www.mattwessels.com/cherry/AFX/AFX (10).jpg) (http://www.mattwessels.com/cherry/AFX/AFX (11).jpg) With the sun visor: (http://www.mattwessels.com/cherry/AFX/AFX (12).jpg) (http://www.mattwessels.com/cherry/AFX/AFX (13).jpg) (http://www.mattwessels.com/cherry/AFX/AFX .jpg) The best part: it only cost me $140... :D Brand new. Title: Re: I got a new helmet.... Post by: metbandit1 on September 28, 2009, 11:33:37 PM man you know how dangerous doing that to your lid is...oh so dangerous...
Title: Re: I got a new helmet.... Post by: spooph on September 29, 2009, 06:54:11 AM Crushed, I hear what you mean... :P A fist actually, no?
And Met, I asked the guy at the shop about it, and he said it's not a problem. It becomes a problem when you actually start compressing the foam, because then you're affecting it's ability to absorb shock... Considering the amount of material I took out - maybe 1.5 mm, they said it shouldn't affect the helmet - they do it all the time to make their helmets fit. This includes Shoei's and Arai's... Some helmets are made on an oval shape, and others on a round shape - turns out this is a round helmet, and my head's an oval.... They also said if I had to take out more than 2.5mm, I should go up a size, but this one fit beautifully everywhere else, ya know? So I'm not just a hack, at least I'm an educated hack.. :p Title: Re: I got a new helmet.... Post by: hi-tech on September 29, 2009, 07:34:59 AM u look like a pilot getting on a ninja jet ;)
Title: Re: I got a new helmet.... Post by: crushedcamber on September 29, 2009, 07:57:52 PM turns out this is a round helmet, and my head's an oval.... could have more easily modified your head... with the economy down like it be, you can get some surgery pretty cheaply... :D Title: Re: I got a new helmet.... Post by: KURT on January 10, 2010, 08:18:40 PM I became interested in the AFX D/s helmet in June, when Bike Bandit had them for $86... I wanted the visor, but I thought the long chin guard looked a bit excessive for the street.
How is that helmet working out for you, spooph? Title: Re: I got a new helmet.... Title: Re: I got a new helmet.... Post by: spooph on January 12, 2010, 01:33:35 PM Kurt, the helmet is awesome in the summer, when the temps are above 40F at night... :P It's way too open to ride below 40F... I really like it. The visor catches the wind every now and again, but is great for obstructing the sun... What else would you like to know?
Zandit, we'll see about the mug-shot thing.. Title: Re: I got a new helmet.... I'd still like to check 'em out. I bought my wife a new HJC IS-MAX to go with her bike... very nice helmet for the $$! Title: Re: I got a new helmet.... Post by: metbandit1 on January 13, 2010, 07:11:30 AM the IS-Maxs are very good lids for the cash however the lid thats better for the cash is the HJC FG-15 which is a fiberglass lid

Title: Re: I got a new helmet.... Post by: Travisty on January 16, 2010, 08:18:30 AM Hey Spooph, just read that you said the helmet is good for 40+ degree weather... What would you suggest for weather lower than that? The helmet I have now was one I just wanted to get for last summer and it's done its job, but now I want to get a helmet that will keep my head warm. My helmet has some ridiculous wind noise too which gets REALLY obnoxious on the 2+ hour trips.. Any suggestions there? I've tried earplugs, and while those work AWESOME, I really don't like the fact that I can't hear my bike as well as with no ear plugs, and I love the sound of my bike. :'(
And...... Sorry for the hijack from the helmet topic, but what about gloves? I was dumb and broke, and rode with some vented "Summer" gloves ALL yeah, including wet/cold mornings down into the 40's; I hate numb fingers. So this year, I have vowed to get a pair of cold weather gloves and keep the warm weather gloves, so I can switch as I need to! ;D Title: Re: I got a new helmet.... Post by: spooph on January 16, 2010, 09:38:27 PM I find my full face road helmet is much better in the cold... The reason this helmet is only good down to about 40F is because the chin is so far in front of your face it allows in copious amounts of air... My mommy made a spiffy sweater, or "jumper" if your Australian/British, for me which has a ridiculously high collar, when zipped up seals pretty good to the bottom of my "regular shape" road helmet, an HJC $100- helmet.... I've recently picked up a baklava.... oh sorry, a balaclava made out of spandex or something which I'm going to give a shot and see if it keeps some individual parts of my face a little warmer.... My helmet is VERY noisy, but I don't much notice with my $20 Walmart special "Marshmallow" ear buds. They seal so well I can hear the music on like Volume 3 out of 30 on my phone, hear the bike a plenty, horns, sirens, but not insults yelled out the window... They work for me... If you can't hear your bike with the ear-buds in, put on a louder exhaust.. :P
Gloves, I've been riding around with some "mildly cold weather gloves" as of late, first gear I think, but my fingers still get too cold for my operating ability of comfort, thus I finally broke down and got some EXTREME cold weather gloves - some Tour Master Winter Elites, and will be giving them a shot with my heated grip tomorrow going to church (30 min ride into the mountains)... If they don't keep my hands as warm as I want to be, then I'm going to have to start saving electric gloves, which are WAY expensive! and what about the option to not ride and drive a car on those cold mornings? Bah, sacrilegious! Title: Re: I got a new helmet.... Post by: Travisty on January 17, 2010, 12:00:45 PM If you can't hear your bike with the ear-buds in, put on a louder exhaust.. :P Haha.. You say that now. If you rode the bike, you'd be asking for a quieter exhaust, this MF'er is loud! I'm not saying I can't hear the exhaust, just saying that I can't hear it as much as I'd like to, meaning that the ear buds quiet it down a little too much for me. Quote and what about the option to not ride and drive a car on those cold mornings? Bah, sacrilegious! I like riding, and will ride as often as possible. I shelve the bike during the snowy months just because I don't trust myself (and others, ha) with the slick conditions... But one of these days, I'll get it out when there is still snow on the ground! |
