Its that time of year again, for the world's toughest all terrain race! Cars, Trucks, Buggies and BIKES!

Last year of the big bikes (even if they are restricted). Next year 450 limit. Three aussies riding this year, my pick is Spaniard Marc Coma, but its anyones race, not the fastest but those who ride with min problems.

I don't mean to come off like a wet blanket , (you may wish to refer to me as , "A Bitter Little Man"  that's O.K.) but as good as this race may be, it just isn't the same now that it's been moved to  South America.  And on that note I think they should drop the name DAKAR because it no longer applies.   Sad

COMPLETELY agree! That said, it still needs 'our' support so one day it can return to the great venue/race that is Dakar.

In my eyes they should have re-branded it, but I still love watching!

Dakar Rally spectator dies after crash
January 3, 2010 - 9:04AM

AFP

A female spectator was killed after a vehicle taking part in the gruelling Dakar Rally careered off the course and crashed into a group of fans on Saturday, medical sources said.

The accident happened during the opening stage of the 2010 event between Buenos Aires and Cordoba.

A number of other spectators were also hurt in the incident which involved a 4x4 vehicle driven by German-Swiss duo Mirco Schultis and Ulrich Leardi.

"Competitor number 418 (Schultis-Leardi) collided with a group of spectators at the 75km mark of the special stage outside the 'public zone' (a secured area reserved for spectators)," said a statement released by the organisers before the fatality was confirmed.

The Dakar Rally, which was switched to South America last year because of increasing security concerns in its traditional African home, is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous motorsports events in the world.

In the 2009 race, French motorcyclist Pascal Terry was killed while racing in the fourth stage.

According to an AFP count, Saturday's fatality brought the death count of people involved in the race since its inception in 1979 to 52 and the 16th spectator.

The nanny morons have already come out saying how dangerous it is, yadda yadda yadda... bugger off.

Nice videos. I would hate to get stuck out there in the middle on nowhere. Good thing they have some knowledge on how to fix it on the spot.

Yeah, I'd love to make a trip to Dakar (real one) and watch the whole thing, follow them along the route.
