Sprocket/chain upgrades....

520 to 530 updrade.....

Well i'm not doing it to get more performance, but.....
To get longer life from my front sprockets....
...I hope....
My rear sprocket shows hardly any signs of wear, and......
The chain always shows no real signs of wear or stretch.....

But that dam front sprocket wears........
I do get a lot of miles tho be4 a change.....20,000 miles..aprx...

I was checking the thickness between the 520 JT i now use, and the 530 JT i will be changing soon......
WOW!!!! what a difference.......

A whole 1/8 inch thicker on that 530......

N that chain is really-really rugged.......

Now if it all fits.......
The rear sprocket on the 530 has a kinda depression on one side of it where it bolts on......

The other side has none....

The front sprocket has no depressions at all....
So i will have to check the old front sprocket when i remove it to see if that has a depression or not.......
The reason will be to make sure of alinements of the 2 new sprockets.
I also will have the problem of the front sprocket nut being out a bit further n possibly hitting on the sensor that bolts on next to it....
My solution to that will be by taking a bit off the outside of that nut with a grinder......gently.........
Possibly that 1/8 inch of thickness the new sprockets are.
That outter section of nut does nothing as i can tell.
The threds on the shaft only go about half way or a bit further into the nut with stock sprockets.....
I'm betting that if i put the front sprocket on normally, and......
Then install the rear sprocket with the depression facing outward everything will be in line.
If i install the rear the otherway i think it will be offset a bit toward center or rim, and that will throw the chain off making adjustment hard, and not right.
Any thoughts will be appreciated.....

Ok...got it all figureded out.....:thumb:
Front sprocket wont matter what way it goes.....same eitherway.....
No left or right or up or down........
Rear will go with the indent facing outward......
That will keep everything in an alinement.....:thumb:

N that's what i thought anyway, but.......
Thought maybe someone else had a view on it......

Izzza all back 2gether.......

Everything seems in line.......
Had to bring the axle adjuster all the way in to get chain on....

Same amount of links as the 520 was---114......

The 520 was all in but 3/8 inch anyway...
I turned those adjusters out maybe a half turn on the bolt to get chain tension slack at about 1.5 inches
Maybe after running the bike this 530 will be about the same.....
Chain is running center of rear sprocket.....Yes..yes....

I did have to grind a bit off the front sprocket nut on outside edge where that sensor edge runs.....

I ran the bike in gears---1 threw 6 up on the stand.......
Up to 60 MPH and back down a bunch of times......
Kinda weird when u don't have the bike on the ground on how if sounds n feels.....No real weight on it.....
It sounded like something was like kinda rubbing..?.....
...but.....
I looked n looked n looked for signs of that.....Nope.....nutta......
Nnnnn i looked really-really good......
Check chain for signs of that rubbing......nothing.....
Checked in where the front sprocket runs.....remember i went one tooth more there...... a while back......
No sign of rubbing in there.....

I thought maybe it was the brake disk......could of put it together wrong.......Nope.....

So i ran it...n ran it.......threw the gears.......

When spinning it in neutral by hand u feel or hear nothing.....
Nice n smooth.......
I'll have to take it up n down the street later slow up to 35 or so a few times n see how it feels......with gear on in case.....

So for now the upgrade to a 530 heavy duty setup looks good.....

I'll post later after a test ride.........

Everyone must think im nuts going up to such a heavy chain on a 650, but......
I look for long life....not speeds....I'm old now......

**********************************

Road tested it a bit ago.........

All seemed good......

Started out first couple miles on a back road for a few miles no more then 35 mph.......

Then brought it to 45 a while......

Stopped n looked it all over real good........

All looked well.......

Drove it the speed limit of 50 a while......

stopped again n looked it over real well......

Headed home n brought her to 60-65 for a while hoping nothing went wrong......

Nothing did.......guess the Bitch is good......

Didn't push it much to see how performance has been affected.......I'll find that out a bit later after i feel it's safe.....

****************************

Road tested again......

This time i give it a little more throttle.....

Really don't notice any diff in performance, but i'm not racing on a track counting seconds either....

Drove mostly at 45-50, and at times where i could ran at 55 mph....
Was out about 45 minutes.....
Stopped a few time n looked n felt around for anything.....

Everything seems A-Ok.....
I actually can say the bike feels smoother with the extra heavy chain/sprockets.......

I expected it would.......

More turning mass weight......

I'm quite happy with the result......
Speedo is still close......
Speedo will say 42 MPH...GPS says 44......
Better then it was stock at speedo 45 n GPS say 40-41....

*************************************

Well now afta a few rides on the bike with the new chain/sprockets i gotta....I do -I do...... adjust the chain one ear of the adjuster bolts......

1/6 of a turn i'da say.....

It is justa weeeee bit sloppy....n......I don't want to much slack cause.....

There isn't a lotta room in there round that front sprocket n that metal piece that is around it......

I know next time i order i will go with a stock size front sprocket n go 5 less teeth in the rear instead of the 2 less.......

That should keep me about where i'm at right now......

I've herd threw the grapevine that 3 in rear equals 1 in front......

******************************************

Ok found that little noise i was hearing after the chain/sprocket changeout.....:thumb:
The noise did go away after it wore a very small grove...
The clip master link was ever so lightly touching that sensor on the front sprocket on the inside of it.....
I did check that after when spinning the wheel by hand, and it did look close, but wasn't touching.....
I guess when the wheel is down n under load it did as the chain moves back n forth that tiny bit on the sprocket.....
There is a little bit of room between the sprocket n the inside of the sideplates.....very little.....
So i took the sensor off.........
It is a fairly thick piece of aluminium the bracket is made from.....:thumb:
So using my dremel tool, and the round sanding tool, i ground a spot off it a bit all across it so it will never rub again.....:thumb:
All i needed to remove was 1/16 inch of material.....:thumb:
There's always something when u doing a change like this i guess......

Guess we're good to go now.....
