Title: Layed down my R6... Post by: ~Aeros~ on November 15, 2009, 11:19:22 AM I layed down my 2001 Champions Limited Edition R6. I'm so pissed at myself. It punched a hole through the left side crankcase cover. She bled out on the interstate. So what happened was, a car in front of me slammed on their brakes and I did the same, but it was too late, My front wheel hit some broken up plastic rim cover and I went down on the left side. We hit, the bike frontflipped over me, at some point I pushed it hard enough to the side for it to slide off the road and then I jumped up and ran off the road myself. Adrenaline is wonderful, because if not the guy behind me would have hit my bike, and consequently, ME! I don't know how I threw my bike to the side in time, It was rush hour, and I was getting off at the Causeway/Veterans Exit in New Orleans. Any of you that have been there know how lucky I am to be alive. Oh, and WEAR YOUR HELMET!!!!!!!!!!!!!, cuz if I wouldn't have been wearing mine then I would have been knocked out and ran over. Only one impact spot on my helmet, but it was at 65, and I would have been out cold. NOONE stopped to help except for a guy that just totaled his Harley and he helped me load it in his truck and take it the 1/2 a mile I had left til my destination. His son was randomly videoing me on my streetbike with his new phone, accidently caught the whole thing on film, and they showed me it while we were waiting on the cops. I went down, stood up (while still moving @ like 35 from the momentum) shoved my bike to the side of the road, rolled about ten more times and then jumped up and played frogger across 3 lanes of traffic to get to the side of the road. I will try to get the video, and pictures of the damage to my bike and me are coming soon. I sprained my wrist when I threw the bike off me and sprained my ankle jumping outta oncoming traffic. Other than that and some roadrash on my knees and ankles I just peachy. Hurts like hell to walk. Oh and Virt I guess we can't go riding when you come down. Least not til I figure out if it runs. Lol. More as it unfolds. I'll tally the damage and post it up. Thanks guys. (And I might need some help figuring out how to change out the cover, I'll keep it posted as it comes up.)
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: zandit on November 15, 2009, 12:32:41 PM Aeros, thats horrible news, but I'm glad you came out ok. Virt can still go for a ride with you, only now he can keep up with you on his pedal powered trike!!!! :P
A bike can always be repaired or replaced, but sometimes you can't. Keep that gear on buddy! Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: Delta107 on November 15, 2009, 03:41:50 PM Dude that sucks! Glad your ok. I hope your getting a new Helmet, eh?
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: spooph on November 15, 2009, 07:00:21 PM Good story Aeros. Glad to hear you walked away with minor injuries. Keep us posted. I like your attitude!
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: BlackBoar on November 15, 2009, 07:07:43 PM Aeros, sorry to hear your news, but good that you were not badly hurt. Banging your head at 65 without a helmet would probably have done significantly more than just knock you out. What other gear did you have on by the way?
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: hi-tech on November 16, 2009, 03:36:37 PM Wow this sucks. Main thing is u are ok.
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: oOdaisyOo on November 16, 2009, 03:40:21 PM I know exactly where that is. Man, you ARE lucky! I bet that would be a great video to see though.
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: ~Aeros~ on November 16, 2009, 06:06:21 PM Thanks so much guys. Blackboar, I was wearing my helmet and my 2001 jacket that I bought with the bike (It matched... Not anymore though Lol), and I was SOOOO cloase to wearing my gloves and boots, decided against it, and scraped off the skin from my knuckles on my left hand, and my ankles on both sides. Not to mention the sprained ankle. Point is, when in doubt, WEAR IT. I had my favorite jeans over my military polypros and the only reason I have ANY knee left is because I had on two pair instead of one. Oh, and all of you that THINK you wanna upgrade to a bigger bike? Remember that the bigger the bike, the heavier it is when IT FRONTFLIPS AND LANDS ON TOP OF YOU (and you have to push it off of yourself). So yeah... Just a thought. I'm honestly thinking about downgrading to a 250R just because it's light enough for me to pick up by myself, versus my bikes wet weight of 469 pounds. I'm just saying. It's a thought.
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: spooph on November 16, 2009, 06:57:35 PM Yes Aeros, come to the light... :P
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: Delta107 on November 16, 2009, 08:06:16 PM What he said^
So have you learned ATGATT now? Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: metbandit1 on November 17, 2009, 03:40:06 AM im glad to hear your ok!! that sounds like a nasty crash!! try to get the video!!
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: virtualmatrix258 on November 17, 2009, 12:04:04 PM Shit dude, I'm just glad you made it out alive. You're right, adrenaline is a life saver, makes you do things that would put superman to shame aside from laser beam eyes, but thats a whole 'nother story. Its ashame nobody stopped, been there done that, people are flat out assholes and people don't care for one another anymore. Again just glad you're okay bro!
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: crushedcamber on November 17, 2009, 06:59:30 PM congrats on living! i would love to see the video.
just strictly to see how crazy of a manuver that was. sounds like it was rediculous. but your bike is easy fix, and you DONT need to DOWNGRADE!!!! Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: Delta107 on November 17, 2009, 07:01:36 PM I'm honestly thinking about downgrading to a 250R just because it's light enough for me to pick up by myself, versus my bikes wet weight of 469 pounds. I'm just saying. It's a thought. You don't hear that to often!Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: metbandit1 on November 18, 2009, 12:47:53 AM nah no downgrading is nessisary...however you now know to wear all your gear all the time!
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: hi-tech on December 08, 2009, 07:57:06 PM aero this could have happen on any kind of bike. like met says all gear all the time . keep us posted
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: metbandit1 on December 09, 2009, 12:56:40 AM virts right it can happen to any bike what so ever, also make sure you keep a large enough distance from the car in front. when i recently came off i was glad i was wearing all of my gear even at slow speeds it hurt like a mo'fo'
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: hi-tech on December 09, 2009, 06:33:08 AM Virts? Hey met what are u on? :)
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: metbandit1 on December 10, 2009, 02:22:10 AM i was the morning when i posted so i was tired!!
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: easterly4 on December 10, 2009, 10:48:27 AM You are lucky! The Causeway/Vets exit is a mangled mess lately. Traffic comes to a halt heading Causeway North and with the new lanes on the right, poeple can pretty much hit 80 MPH before coming up to the line of traffic in the curve. Really dangerous. Thanks also for the advice on gear. I wear jeans but want to order riding jeans made to slide a little before ripping, possibly saving the nurse from picking gravel out my butt cheeks. I also need to replace my gloves too.
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: metbandit1 on December 10, 2009, 11:13:00 AM draggin jeans are some of the best. deffinately worth the money!
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: zandit on December 10, 2009, 12:39:21 PM Draggin jean are great, but they are very different in the way they slide on the seat. I move around so much more than I used to in the leathers. It takes some getting used to, but can be very fun!!
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: spooph on December 10, 2009, 01:05:23 PM I take it then zandit you like sliding your butt around, eh? :P
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: metbandit1 on December 10, 2009, 01:18:37 PM haha niiiiice :P
its just because he's a bit older spooph he needs to be able to have free movement or his hip will play up :P Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: zandit on December 10, 2009, 01:41:19 PM :P
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: Delta107 on December 10, 2009, 07:45:47 PM haha lol
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: Red Dragon on December 10, 2009, 08:07:38 PM Glad to hear you came out a lot better than I did! I Thought about upgrading until I had my wreck. Now I'll my keep my 250. Besides you can't beat it in the twisties!
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: easterly4 on December 11, 2009, 08:30:19 AM I may upgrade to a 650R. More upright riding position than other models. Also read that is a good choice for beginners and experienced riders. I really want to go with more power as I don't like having to ride at high revs just to be able to squirt out of a tight spot (like some idiot coming up from behind too fast). Anyone have any knowledge of the 650R? It's the 2nd least expensive bike out there from Kawi ($7K new). Not that this thread is a bike discussion, but it sorta is.
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: oOdaisyOo on December 11, 2009, 08:34:14 AM When I was doing my research on 250s and 650s I heard that both were great bikes. Supposedly the 650 has good torque and is nice and slim. Being slim makes the seat height feel lower. It's suppose to be very similar to the 250, just with a bigger engine. I've heard nothing but good things about it.
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: Delta107 on December 11, 2009, 02:15:00 PM What about a 250 frame and fairings, and just drop the 500cc motor in it?
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: spooph on December 11, 2009, 03:04:30 PM will it fit?
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: Delta107 on December 11, 2009, 03:19:13 PM will it fit? I thought ztrack said it did? I know ive read that it does somewhere. lolTitle: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: spooph on December 11, 2009, 03:33:23 PM oooo, I might have to look into that.... :P
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: Felix on December 11, 2009, 03:46:44 PM I've spent some time on a ER6N which is essentially the same thing. After riding my bike (ZX6R) and jumping on this thing, few things I noticed. Its not a supersport and I shouldnt ride it like one. After market exhausts on these things are LOUD, runs out of puff at 10k so most of your 'fun' riding will be done around 8k, normal riding from 4k upwards. Its 2 and a bit seconds quicker down the 1/4 mile than the 250, bit over a second slower than the ZX6R.
Took me ages to, and I didnt really get used to the handle bars, felt like a push bike to me... Great bike, but if was looking for something similar seating I would have gone the Z750 which is an animal (4pots compared to 2pots) in comparison. In short ER great bike for commuting, and still having fun. But dont expect a supersport feel, 250r had more of that then this. Oh and as for 'power getting you out of trouble' it will get you into more than out of it. Careful and well practiced riding techniques is where its at, power means speed which means less time to recognise, think, react... just my 2c (as I hop onto my silly fast supersort) :P Felix Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: metbandit1 on December 12, 2009, 12:52:52 AM +1 felix :P

Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: zandit on December 13, 2009, 03:55:20 AM + ummmmmm,...................oh crap, I lost count!!!!!!!!!
I'm seriously looking at the 650R as well as a good bike for riding 2-up and cruseing around, the 250r will still be there for the twisties. Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: easterly4 on December 17, 2009, 11:09:12 AM Heard ya'll on the riding skill over unnecessary power. In accordance with the MSF course I've taken twice, I try to practice what was drilled into my head: SEE - Search (ahead, beside and behind you), Evaluate (WTF is happening ahead, beside and behind you) and Execute (tke action safely instead of grabbing handfuls of throttle or brakes in reaction to the WTF situation)!
Title: Re: Layed down my R6... Post by: spooph on December 17, 2009, 12:42:47 PM easterly, that's a great way to put it. I think they should include your description in the MSF, people might actually remember it then! :P
